George Castro II
Mr. Castro also served as a Commissioner to the New Jersey State Investment Council, representing the consolidated Police and Fireman’s Pension Fund Commission, and was appointed to serve as Vice-Chair from September 2002 to September 2003. In December 2003, he was appointed to the NJSEA Board of Commissioners.
As a real estate entrepreneur, Castro quickly began to branch out into related fields such as development and construction. In 1994, he purchased the vaudeville-era Ritz Theatre in Elizabeth, NJ, and undertook a massive restoration project to return the historic, architectural gem to its former glory. In 2001, the Mayor of Elizabeth appointed him to serve as Commissioner of the Zoning Board of Adjustment of said city. He also serves as member of the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors of Union County College.
Castro’s philanthropic and political achievements have been formally recognized by many of New Jersey’s elected officials. On February 22, 2001, Congressman Steve Rothman sponsored a certificate of Special Congressional recognition for Castro’s outstanding community achievements. On February 25, 2000, Congressman Robert Menendez recognized his accomplishments and contributions to the community by issuing a Congressional Record Certificate. On September 27, 2002, then Senator Jon Corzine issued a United States Senatorial Citation at the 4th Annual Patriots Path Council Boy Scouts of America Awards Recognition Dinner, and in November, 2001, he was named Business Person of the Year by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. |
