The NJSEA Transportation Group is spearheading an initiative to develop the first comprehensive Safety Action Plan for the Hackensack Meadowlands District. Funded by a grant from the United States Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) discretionary program, the Meadowlands Action Plan for Safety (MAP4S) is aimed at creating safer streets for all users by reducing fatalities and severe injuries. As NJSEA has a statutory obligation to develop strategies to mitigate adverse impacts of new development projects on the transportation system throughout the District, the Authority is leveraging this opportunity to analyze the impacts of land use development on safety, particularly those related to the adverse effects of heavy truck traffic on vulnerable users in underserved communities. With the rapid growth of e-commerce and the proliferation of warehouses within the District, the need for safe multimodal connectivity and accessibility has never been more urgent. By compiling input from District communities and public and private stakeholders, MAP4S will provide a robust plan for District municipalities to assess their safety needs and prioritize proposed safety projects, all in support of the zero-fatality initiative, known as Vison Zero.
